Retaining Wall, Fresh Mulch Beds and New Plants Done Right

Sometimes a yard just needs a full reset - not a quick fix. That's exactly what this property called for. Overgrown, undefined beds, no real structure along the driveway, and nothing tying the front of the house together. We came in and tackled it all at once.

The retaining wall along the driveway was the anchor for everything else. We used a stacked block system with a clean cap course that gives the wall a finished, polished look. It creates a solid border between the bed and the driveway while also doing the functional work of holding the grade in place. That kind of structure lasts.

Once the wall was set, we re-cut the bed lines into smooth, flowing curves and got to work on the planting plan. A Japanese maple, ornamental grasses, a dwarf conifer, and a few accent plants with contrasting foliage give the beds a layered look with different colors and textures working together. These aren't just filler plants - they were chosen to look good now and get better with time.

After everything went in, we topped it all with rich black mulch. The contrast between the dark mulch and the green plants is hard to beat. It makes every plant pop, keeps the beds looking sharp, and helps hold moisture in the soil. The curved edges between the lawn and the beds are clean and crisp - that detail alone changes how the whole front of the property reads from the street.

When you put a solid retaining wall, the right plants, and a fresh layer of black mulch together, the result is a yard that looks intentional. Not just maintained - designed.
