If your yard holds water after every rain, you already know how frustrating it is. The grass stays muddy, the ground gets soft, and over time that standing water can do real damage to your landscape and soil. A French drain is one of the most effective ways to get ahead of that problem - and that's exactly what we tackled for this customer.
The whole process starts with excavation. We trenched out the drain path using light excavation equipment, keeping the cuts clean and the depth consistent. That kind of precision matters because proper slope is what makes the whole system work. We use a level throughout the dig - not just eyeball it - to make sure water actually moves where we want it to go.
Once the trench was ready, we lined it with heavy-duty filter fabric before laying in the gravel bed and perforated pipe. The fabric is a step a lot of people overlook, but it keeps soil from migrating into the gravel over time and clogging the system. The pipe gets bedded in clean round stone, wrapped in fabric, and tied into the collection points. You end up with a system that's built to last, not just something that works for a season or two.
We also installed surface catch basins at key low spots to pull water in from the top, feeding it directly into the subsurface pipe network. The grated inlet covers sit flush with grade so they blend into the yard once the grass fills back in. All the dirt work at the end gets graded back smooth, seeded, and left in good shape - not just a muddy mess for the homeowner to deal with.
A soggy yard isn't just an annoyance. Left alone, that water can undermine your landscaping, create erosion problems, and turn a usable yard into a no-go zone for half the year. Getting a proper drainage solution in place is one of the smartest investments a homeowner can make in their property.
